Can an ectopic pregnancy be seen at two weeks?

Pregnancy dating usually starts from the first day of the last menstrual period, not from conception. This means two weeks on a pregnancy calendar may be before ovulation, while two weeks after ovulation is a different stage. A scan may therefore show no pregnancy yet, and that result alone cannot confirm or exclude an ectopic pregnancy.

Clinicians may follow pregnancy hormone levels over time and arrange a transvaginal ultrasound when findings are expected to be clearer. Pelvic pain or bleeding changes the urgency of assessment.

Tell the clinician exactly how the date was calculated, the date of your last period, and whether you used fertility treatment. Keep scheduled blood tests and scans, and report new symptoms rather than waiting for the next appointment. A history of pelvic inflammatory disease or previous tubal problems may be relevant to the assessment.

Go to emergency care for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse, increasing dizziness, or heavy bleeding. Call for urgent advice if pain and bleeding occur together with a positive pregnancy test. These symptoms require assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can bleed internally.

Ask what your dates mean clinically, when hormone testing should be repeated, when a scan should be arranged, and which symptoms require immediate treatment. Ask how the team will decide whether the pregnancy is in the uterus or elsewhere.
