What should you know about ectopic negative pregnancy test?

Home tests detect pregnancy hormone in urine. Testing very early, using diluted urine, or having hormone levels that are rising slowly can produce a negative result even when pregnancy is present. An ectopic pregnancy may produce lower or slower-rising hormone levels than expected, but a test result alone cannot locate a pregnancy. Pelvic inflammatory disease and previous tubal problems can raise clinical concern, while pelvic pain has many possible causes.

If pregnancy is possible and you have one-sided pelvic pain, bleeding, or persistent symptoms, contact a clinician promptly. They may repeat a urine or blood pregnancy test, measure hormone levels over time, and arrange a transvaginal ultrasound. A scan can be inconclusive when the pregnancy is very early, so follow-up matters. If an ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, treatment may involve monitoring, medicine, or surgery such as salpingectomy, chosen according to your symptoms and findings.

Go to emergency care for sudden severe pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness, marked weakness, heavy bleeding, or collapse. Internal bleeding can develop even when a prior home test was negative. Call emergency services if you feel unsafe travelling or are becoming faint.
