What should you know about dust mite allergy test?

Testing is considered when symptoms such as sneezing, nasal blockage, itchy eyes or cough suggest an allergic trigger. A clinician may use a skin prick test or a blood test, depending on your history, medicines and skin condition.

A positive result indicates sensitisation, but it does not by itself prove that dust mites cause every symptom. The result is interpreted alongside where symptoms occur, how soon they start and other possible triggers, such as Pet Allergy or another indoor allergen.

Before testing, list your symptoms, locations, timing and current medicines. Ask the testing service whether any medicines need to be paused; do not stop prescribed treatment without instructions. Tell the clinician about previous severe allergic reactions, skin conditions and breathing problems.

Testing may support a plan for Allergic Rhinitis, Allergic Conjunctivitis or Asthma. It can also prevent unnecessary restriction when symptoms are not linked to food or another suspected trigger.

Testing is planned care, not a substitute for emergency treatment. Seek urgent help for sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, dizziness or collapse after an exposure; these can be signs of Anaphylaxis.

Ask which test suits you, how medicines may affect it, what a positive or negative result can and cannot establish, and what exposure-reduction plan follows. Ask whether ongoing symptoms need assessment for Chronic Sinusitis or another condition.
