Dry flaky skin behind the ears: what to know

Skin behind the ears can trap moisture and product residue, while mask loops, glasses, helmet straps, and hair can create friction. Dryness may cause fine white scale and tightness. Atopic dermatitis often causes itch and an easily irritated barrier. Asteatotic eczema can make skin visibly dry and cracked. Psoriasis may create a more sharply outlined, thicker scaly patch and can involve the scalp or other sites. These are possibilities rather than a diagnosis from location alone.

Clean the fold with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free product, then dry it carefully without rubbing. Apply a small amount of plain moisturiser to intact skin. Keep hair products from collecting in the crease and consider whether a new mask, frame, strap, or dye preceded the flare. Do not put cotton buds, oils, or medicated creams into the ear canal. Avoid peeling scale away, because tiny cracks can sting and invite infection.

See a clinician if the fold becomes very tender, hot, swollen, wet, crusted, or foul-smelling, or if fluid comes from the ear. Prompt assessment is sensible for rapidly spreading redness, fever, significant pain, or reduced hearing. Arrange routine dermatology care when the rash keeps returning, extends onto the scalp or face, or fails to settle with basic skin care.
