What should you know about cracked skin behind ear?

The crease behind the ear can trap sweat, shampoo, hair products, or water. Glasses arms, mask loops, headphones, and scratching can add friction. Dry weather or frequent washing may weaken the barrier, while Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis can present with itchy, scaly, inflamed skin in and around the crease. The condition presents with these changes, but the crack itself does not establish one diagnosis.

A moist, tender, crusted, or spreading area may need an examination for infection or significant inflammation. Ear discharge, hearing change, or pain inside the ear is a separate concern and should not be managed by putting cream into the ear canal.

Rinse away residue with lukewarm water, pat the fold dry, and avoid cotton swabs or vigorous rubbing. Apply a thin layer of plain fragrance-free moisturiser or protective ointment to the external crease, keeping products out of the ear canal. Emollient Therapy may support a dry, irritated barrier. Reduce rubbing from accessories and avoid fragranced hair or skin products until the area settles. Do not peel crusts or use leftover medicated creams without advice.

Arrange a review if the crack persists, returns, becomes very itchy, or spreads onto the scalp or face. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, foul-smelling drainage, fever, or redness extending away from the crease. Get medical advice for ear discharge, new hearing difficulty, or significant pain inside the ear. An examination can separate contact irritation from eczema, psoriasis, infection, or mechanical friction.

Ask whether the crease shows Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, contact irritation, or infection; whether shampoo, headphones, glasses, or mask loops are contributing; which product is safe near the ear; and how to prevent recurrence.
