What should you know about dog keloid?

Short answer

A dog keloid is a raised scar that grows beyond the original injury and may itch, feel tender, or become firm.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical feel
Firm, raised, and sometimes itchy or tender
Possible triggers
Injury, surgery, piercing, injection, burn, or acne

What a keloid means

Keloids form when scar tissue continues to build after skin has healed. They can follow cuts, burns, piercings, injections, surgery, or inflamed spots such as acne. The surface may be smooth, shiny, darker or lighter than nearby skin, and the growth can extend past the wound edge. A keloid is different from a hypertrophic scar, which generally stays within the original injury. A photograph cannot confirm the diagnosis because other skin lumps can look similar.

What you can do

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a scar is enlarging, itchy, painful, or restricting movement. Do not cut, squeeze, or repeatedly irritate it. After the skin is fully closed, a clinician may discuss steroid injection into the skin, laser approaches, cryotherapy, or carefully selected surgery. Keloids can return after treatment, so the plan may combine methods and include follow-up. When to seek care

Seek prompt medical review for rapid change, bleeding without an obvious injury, an open or draining area, increasing warmth, spreading redness, pus, fever, or pain that is worsening. Urgent care is appropriate if swelling affects breathing, swallowing, vision, or movement. A new lump should be examined rather than assumed to be a keloid; the [Skin Lumps](/symptoms/skin-lumps/) guide explains why assessment matters.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the growth fits a keloid or another scar type, whether treatment is needed now, which approach suits its location and thickness, how recurrence will be watched for, and what wound care is expected after treatment.

Questions people ask

Can a keloid spread to another person?

No. A keloid is scar tissue and is not an infection that passes between people.

Will every raised scar need removal?

No. Treatment depends on symptoms, growth, location, appearance, and personal preference after assessment.
