Short answer

Snoring is a common presentation of Chronic Sinusitis. Nasal swelling, congestion and mucus can narrow airflow, making mouth breathing and vibration of throat tissues more likely during sleep.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

How it happens
Nasal blockage can encourage mouth breathing and increase airway vibration.
Look beyond sinusitis
Breathing pauses, gasping, or daytime sleepiness need separate assessment.

Why sinus symptoms can affect sleep

When the nose is congested, breathing through it becomes harder. Sleeping with the mouth open can dry the throat, while narrowed upper-airway passages may vibrate as air moves through. A blocked nose may therefore worsen snoring, but it is not the only possible contributor.

Allergies, nasal structure, alcohol or sedating medicines, sleep position, and obstructive sleep apnoea can also play a part. Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, choking sounds, morning headaches, or marked daytime sleepiness needs assessment rather than being attributed to sinusitis alone.

What to do next

Arrange a review if snoring began with persistent nasal blockage, continues after sinus symptoms settle, or affects your sleep or a bed partner's sleep. Describe whether you breathe through your mouth, wake with a dry throat, or notice restless sleep.

Managing the underlying nasal inflammation may improve airflow when chronic sinusitis is contributing. A clinician can assess the nose and discuss suitable treatment. Avoid alcohol close to bedtime if it worsens the noise, and avoid taking sleeping medicines for this problem unless prescribed.

When to seek care promptly

Seek medical assessment soon if someone sees repeated breathing pauses, gasping, choking, or unusual breathing effort during sleep. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, blue or grey lips, chest pain, or sudden confusion.

Questions for your doctor

Could nasal inflammation be narrowing my airflow? Do my symptoms suggest sleep apnoea or another sleep-related breathing problem? Would examining my nose or arranging sleep testing help, and which treatment is appropriate for congestion?
