Does asthma cause wheezing?

Wheezing is usually a high-pitched, musical sound during breathing. In asthma, inflamed airway walls, muscle tightening, and mucus can narrow the tubes carrying air. Air moving through the narrowed passages may create the sound, often more clearly when breathing out. Episodes may follow exercise, cold air, smoke, dust, pollen, or a respiratory infection. Some people mainly notice cough or chest tightness, while a severe flare can produce very little sound because airflow is greatly reduced.

Wheezing can also occur with allergies, infections, reflux, or other lung conditions. A clinician may examine your chest and use breathing tests to identify the cause.

Sit upright and move away from smoke, vapour, or a known trigger. Follow your written asthma action plan and use prescribed inhalers with the technique you were taught. Keep track of when the wheeze starts, what preceded it, and whether cough or breathlessness occurs too. Arrange a review if wheezing returns, disturbs sleep, restricts exercise, or is not controlled by your prescribed plan.

Call emergency services if wheezing comes with severe breathing difficulty, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, marked drowsiness, confusion, or collapse. Seek prompt assessment for sudden wheezing after food, medicine, or an insect sting, particularly if the throat or face is swelling. Use your prescribed emergency instructions while waiting for help.
