Differin gel for milia: what to know

Milia are small, firm, often white or skin-coloured cysts formed when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface. Adapalene encourages more orderly shedding of skin cells, so it may be considered when congestion contributes to recurring bumps. It will not dissolve every cyst, and a bump that resembles milia may be another condition.

The thin skin around the eyes is especially prone to stinging and dryness. Do not put the gel on eyelids, directly beside the eyes, lips, or broken skin unless a clinician has given specific instructions.

If a clinician agrees that adapalene is suitable, apply a small amount to clean, completely dry skin as directed, usually in the evening. Begin gently if advised, use a bland moisturiser, and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day. Peeling, redness, tightness, or burning can occur, especially when starting.

Arrange an assessment if the bumps are painful, inflamed, rapidly changing, bleeding, affecting vision, or not clearly milia. Stop and seek medical advice for marked swelling, blistering, severe pain, or persistent irritation. A dermatologist can remove a confirmed milium with an appropriate sterile technique.

Ask whether the bumps are definitely milia, whether adapalene is appropriate for their location, how often to apply it, and which products should be paused. If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, or treating a child, ask for product-specific guidance before use.
