Understanding different MRI scans

An MRI is not a single standard set of pictures. The radiology team chooses a protocol for the body area and purpose, such as detecting a lesion, mapping its relationship to nearby structures, planning treatment or checking change over time.

Routine sequences emphasise different tissue properties, so fluid, fat, blood products and solid tissue can appear with different brightness. Diffusion imaging examines water movement and may add information about densely packed cells or recent tissue injury. Angiographic techniques display blood vessels, while functional MRI maps changes associated with activity in selected brain areas.

A contrast-enhanced MRI adds images after an injected agent and can highlight blood supply or altered tissue barriers. A multiparametric examination combines several sequence types; for example, it can help characterise an organ before a biopsy decision. The scan name describes its design, not a diagnosis.

Complete the MRI safety questionnaire carefully. Name every implanted device, operation, metal injury, medicine patch and removable aid, even if it has caused no problem before. Provide the precise device model or implant card when available because MRI conditions can differ between devices.

Tell the team about kidney disease, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, previous contrast reactions, pain when lying still and claustrophobia. Ask whether food, drink or medicine instructions apply to your protocol. If prior MRI images were obtained elsewhere, arrange access so the radiologist can compare them.

Press the call button during MRI if you develop breathing trouble, feel faint, experience unexpected heating or pain near an implant, or cannot remain safely positioned. The radiographer can pause the scan and speak with you.

Following contrast, emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat. Separately, do not wait for a scheduled MRI if you develop a seizure, sudden weakness, new confusion or a rapidly worsening severe headache; seek urgent assessment for those symptoms.

Useful questions include which body area and protocol are booked, whether contrast will be considered, how long you must lie still, and whether someone can accompany you. Clarify who will explain the report and whether imaging alone can answer the question or a tissue sample may still be needed.
