What should you know about the DHT hair loss pattern?

Short answer

The DHT hair loss pattern is usually gradual thinning at genetically sensitive areas such as the hairline, crown, or central scalp.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical course
Gradual change is more characteristic than sudden clumps of loss.
Common areas
Hairline, crown, and central scalp can be affected.
Important distinction
Patchy loss, inflammation, or heavy scale suggests another evaluation is needed.

Recognising the distribution

Dihydrotestosterone can act on follicles that inherit sensitivity to it. Those follicles may produce progressively finer hairs, so the first clue can be a changing part, a receding front, reduced crown coverage, or less density across the top. The sides and back may look relatively preserved. In women, the front hairline may remain intact while the part widens; individual patterns vary.

A similar-looking change can come from Telogen Effluvium, Alopecia Areata, Scalp Ringworm, or Traction Alopecia. The appearance alone cannot establish the cause, and a person may have more than one contributor.

How to approach it

Record when you first noticed the change and whether it followed illness, major stress, dietary restriction, childbirth, or a new medicine. Avoid tight styles, repeated chemical processing, and rough brushing while you arrange an assessment. Compare photographs taken months apart rather than judging day-to-day shedding.

A dermatologist can inspect follicle openings and the scalp, review family history, and decide whether further testing is useful. Depending on the findings, they may discuss options including Finasteride Treatment, with careful review of side effects and pregnancy-related precautions.

Changes that need assessment

Arrange prompt review if loss is abrupt, patchy, painful, inflamed, infected-looking, or associated with intense itch or scale. Seek assessment as well when thinning accompanies new facial hair, menstrual change, voice deepening, or other hormonal symptoms. These features may point beyond a simple inherited pattern.

Questions people ask

Is a receding hairline proof of DHT sensitivity?

No. It can fit an inherited pattern, but examination is needed to consider other causes and normal variation.

Why does the pattern differ between people?

Follicle sensitivity, inherited traits, age, hormones, and coexisting scalp conditions can change where thinning appears.
