What should you know about deep dry cough?

A recent cold or acute bronchitis can leave the airways sensitive, so talking, cold air, or lying down may trigger coughing. Allergic rhinitis can cause drainage that irritates the throat. Asthma may cause cough with wheeze, chest tightness, or breathlessness. Acid reflux can irritate the throat even without obvious heartburn.

A cough that continues, returns often, or disrupts sleep deserves assessment. The clinician may ask about smoking or vaping, medicines, allergies, exposures, fever, breathing symptoms, and whether the cough changes with meals or position. A dry sound alone cannot identify its cause.

Drink fluids regularly, use warm drinks if soothing, and avoid smoke, vaping, dust, strong fragrances, and other triggers. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and older children, but it should not be given to infants. Rest your voice and consider a humidified room if dry air worsens irritation.

Arrange medical advice if the cough is persistent, worsening, or affecting sleep and activity. Do not start antibiotics or use someone else’s inhaler. A pharmacist or doctor can help choose a suitable treatment after considering your age, medicines, pregnancy, and other conditions.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, marked drowsiness, or a rapidly worsening cough. Prompt assessment is also needed when a cough follows choking, or when fever and breathing problems occur together.

Ask what pattern best explains the cough, whether you need a chest examination or tests, which medicines could be contributing, and what changes should prompt urgent review.
