Deep cough

A cough may sound deep because it begins in the larger airways or because mucus makes it feel heavy. A Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can cause a temporary cough. Allergic Rhinitis may contribute through throat drainage, while Acid Reflux can irritate the throat and trigger coughing, particularly after meals or when lying down. Asthma can present with cough even when wheezing is not obvious. Bronchiectasis and Chronic Cough require assessment when coughing is long-lasting or repeatedly productive. Bronchiolitis chiefly affects infants and young children.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and avoid smoke, dust, and fragranced air. Sitting upright may ease coughing at night; if reflux seems connected, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician. Keep a simple record of duration, sputum colour and amount, triggers, fever, and breathlessness. Check before using non-prescription cough products, especially for children, pregnancy, or long-term conditions.

Get emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, sudden severe chest pain, or significant blood in sputum. Seek a medical appointment if the cough is worsening, does not settle, disrupts sleep repeatedly, or comes with fever, wheezing, breathlessness, or unexplained weight loss. A child who is struggling to breathe needs urgent attention.
