What should you know about deep breath wheezing?

Asthma commonly presents with wheeze that may vary with exercise, allergens, cold air, or infection. Acute bronchitis can temporarily irritate the airways. COPD may cause ongoing wheeze with cough or reduced exercise tolerance. Allergic rhinitis can contribute through nasal inflammation, while bronchiolitis is mainly a concern in infants and young children. A sudden wheeze with facial swelling, throat tightness, vomiting, or dizziness can occur with anaphylaxis and is an emergency. The sound alone cannot determine the cause.

Sit upright, move away from smoke or a suspected trigger, and keep a record of onset, activity, illness, and associated symptoms. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it according to your personal action plan. Do not borrow an inhaler or delay care while trying home remedies. A clinician may check oxygen levels, listen to your lungs, and consider an inhaler review or nebuliser treatment when clinically appropriate.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or rapidly worsening wheeze. Treat suspected anaphylaxis as an emergency, especially with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Seek same-day medical advice for a first episode, wheezing after an infection, fever, coughing blood, or symptoms that are not settling with your prescribed plan.

Ask what may be narrowing your airways, whether you need breathing tests, how to use your inhaler correctly, and what your written action plan should say. Mention allergies, smoking, previous attacks, medicines, and the exact point in the breath when the noise occurs.
