What should you know about deep breath makes me cough?

After a cold or acute bronchitis, the airway lining can remain reactive, so a larger breath, cool air, or talking may set off a cough. Asthma may cause cough with wheezing, chest tightness, or symptoms during exercise. Allergic rhinitis can add nasal drainage, while acid reflux may irritate the throat and trigger cough after meals or when lying down. Bronchiectasis can produce a persistent mucus-producing cough. The trigger is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Note whether the cough is dry or brings up mucus, how long it has lasted, and whether activity, cold air, meals, dust, or lying down provoke it. Avoid tobacco smoke and other irritants, drink fluids, and follow any prescribed inhaler plan exactly. Do not start antibiotics or someone else’s inhaler. A clinician can listen to your chest and decide whether breathing tests or other evaluation is needed, especially if symptoms recur.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, sudden chest pain, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Seek same-day care for rapidly worsening wheeze, coughing blood, high fever with breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Book an appointment when the cough persists, disturbs sleep, limits activity, or returns whenever you take a deep breath.
