Fine flakes with mild itch can fit dandruff. Greasy scale and redness may occur with seborrheic dermatitis, while thick plaques can suggest scalp psoriasis. Pimple-like bumps point toward folliculitis; intense itch with visible nits or affected household contacts raises the possibility of head lice. These conditions can look similar at first, so the scale, rash, hair changes, and timing all help determine the cause.

Use a medicated shampoo according to its instructions and avoid scratching with nails. Keep combs, brushes, and hats personal while the cause is unclear, and wash away styling products that sting or leave residue. Do not apply lice treatment or antifungal products simply because the scalp itches; the correct choice depends on what is found. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms recur or the diagnosis is uncertain.

Contact a clinician for a painful scalp, pus, open sores, thick crusts, sudden hair breakage, or a rash that spreads beyond the scalp.
