What should you know about a CXR chest X-ray?

A chest X-ray may help assess symptoms such as cough, fever, chest pain or breathlessness. It can show changes that support conditions such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or bronchiectasis, and may give information about heart size. An X-ray is one part of an assessment and may not identify every cause of symptoms.

During the examination, you usually stand or sit against the imaging equipment and hold still while the picture is taken. You may be asked to take a breath and hold it briefly. The test itself is quick, but the report must be interpreted with your history and examination.

Tell the radiographer if you may be pregnant, remove metal objects when asked, and follow the appointment instructions. Wear clothing that allows the chest area to be positioned easily. After the image, ask how and when the result will be shared; the clinician who requested it should explain any follow-up.

A normal image does not always explain ongoing symptoms. If cough, fever or breathlessness continues, arrange review even when an earlier X-ray was reassuring.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, crushing chest pain, coughing blood, new confusion or fainting. These symptoms need prompt assessment and should not wait for a routine X-ray appointment or report.

Ask why the X-ray was requested, what it can and cannot show, when the report will be available, and whether you need another test or follow-up consultation.
