Cramps mid-period

Pain between bleeds can be dull, tight, stabbing or pressure-like. Note its location, whether it is one-sided, how long it lasts and whether it relates to meals, bowel movements, urination, sex or the middle of your cycle. Ovulation may cause short-lived discomfort, while recurring or escalating pain can have other explanations.

Endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, an ovarian endometrioma and pelvic inflammatory disease can present with pelvic pain. A cramp does not by itself show which condition is present. See the overview of [Painful Periods](/symptoms/painful-periods/) for related symptoms.

Use a symptom diary for several cycles, including bleeding, discharge, temperature, bowel changes and medicines. Gentle activity and heat may help mild discomfort. A pharmacist can advise whether an over-the-counter pain reliever is suitable for you. Book a clinician visit if pain keeps returning, affects daily activities or changes your usual cycle; assessment may include a pelvic examination, pregnancy test or ultrasound.

Depending on the cause and your goals, treatment might include managing the underlying condition or discussing the combined pill or hormonal coil.

Get urgent help for sudden intense pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, vomiting, a rigid abdomen or pain with a possible pregnancy. Seek prompt advice for new pain with foul-smelling discharge, pain during sex, burning urine or bleeding outside your expected period.
