COVID headache and light sensitivity

Viral illness, fever, dehydration, poor sleep, and congestion can contribute to headache. Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, can occur with Migraine, while eye irritation such as Conjunctivitis may make bright light uncomfortable. These symptoms cannot identify COVID-19 on their own; testing and the wider symptom pattern may help.

Notice whether the pain is new, sudden, one-sided, throbbing, or linked with nausea, neck stiffness, rash, eye pain, blurred vision, weakness, or confusion. The combination and speed of onset matter more than headache intensity alone.

Rest in a quiet, dim room without making it completely dark if that worsens discomfort. Drink fluids, reduce screen glare, and use a cool cloth if helpful. Take only a suitable pain reliever according to its instructions; ask a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have another medical condition, or take regular medicines.

If you have possible COVID-19, follow current advice about testing and limiting contact while unwell. Keep notes on onset, triggers, vision changes, temperature, and associated symptoms. Avoid driving if vision is affected or the headache makes you unsafe.

Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, seizure, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, severe breathing difficulty, or inability to wake. Headache with fever and stiff neck, a new rash, repeated vomiting, or marked drowsiness needs urgent assessment because Meningitis is one serious possibility.

Get prompt medical advice for new persistent light sensitivity, eye pain, reduced vision, a red painful eye, or symptoms that are steadily worsening. People with immune suppression, pregnancy, or significant long-term illness should seek advice early.
