What should you know about COVID chills with no fever?

Chills are involuntary muscle contractions that create a feeling of cold or shaking. They can happen before a fever develops, while the body is responding to infection, or when the room, clothing, hydration, or blood sugar affects how warm you feel. A thermometer reading can be normal even when you feel unwell. COVID-19 is one possibility, alongside Influenza, a urinary infection, or another illness. Travel and mosquito exposure can matter when considering Malaria or Dengue Fever. Chills alone cannot identify the cause.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and check your temperature again if the shaking returns or you develop new symptoms. Consider a COVID test according to local clinical advice, especially after contact with someone who is ill. Record when chills occur, how long they last, and whether you have cough, sore throat, pain passing urine, back pain, vomiting, or a rash. Avoid overheating yourself or taking antibiotics without assessment. A clinician can decide whether urine testing, blood tests, or examination is needed.

Seek emergency help for confusion, fainting, severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, extreme weakness, or skin that feels cold and clammy. Get same-day medical advice for repeated shaking episodes, rapidly worsening illness, severe pain, persistent vomiting, new rash, or pain in the side or back.
