Short answer

The COVID-19 virus, SARS-CoV-2, is a respiratory virus that can cause illness ranging from mild symptoms to serious lung disease.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the infection behaves

SARS-CoV-2 passes mainly through particles released when an infected person breathes, speaks, coughs or sneezes. People may spread it before they realise they are ill. Common presentations include fever, cough, headache, fatigue and a generally unwell feeling, although symptoms vary and some people have none.

The infection can affect the airways and lungs. In some people it contributes to pneumonia or symptoms that continue beyond the initial illness, sometimes described as Long COVID. A symptom does not by itself confirm COVID-19; testing and examination may be needed.

Practical steps if you feel ill

Stay home from close contact while you feel unwell, improve airflow indoors, wash your hands and consider testing under local advice. Rest and drink regularly, and keep track of breathing, temperature, alertness and your ability to do usual tasks. If you have a condition or medicine that may increase your risk, contact a healthcare professional early to discuss the right plan.

Avoid sharing personal items and tell people you may have exposed if advised by local health services. Do not rely on symptom severity alone to decide whether a review is needed.

Warning signs

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, persistent chest pain, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, or inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician promptly if fever does not settle, you cannot keep fluids down, or cough and weakness are worsening. A sudden change in breathing deserves urgent assessment regardless of test timing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which test is appropriate, how to protect household members, and what symptoms should prompt review. If symptoms linger, ask whether another cause or Long COVID assessment should be considered.

Questions people ask

Can someone spread the virus without symptoms?

Yes. Transmission can occur before symptoms or when symptoms are absent, which is why ventilation and staying away from others while unwell help.

Does a cough prove I have COVID-19?

No. Cough has many causes. Testing and clinical context help distinguish COVID-19 from other illnesses.
