COVID-19 today: symptoms, testing, and care

COVID-19 may cause cough, fever, headache, fatigue, or a general feeling of being unwell. Some people have mild symptoms or none, while others develop breathing problems or complications such as pneumonia. Symptoms overlap with other infections, so a symptom alone cannot identify the cause. Some people continue to have symptoms after the initial illness; this is described as Long COVID when symptoms persist or recur.

If you develop compatible symptoms, consider testing and reduce close contact while you follow local health advice. Rest, drink enough fluid, and use medicines only as suitable for you and according to the label or clinician advice. People who are older, pregnant, immunocompromised, or living with significant medical conditions should seek advice early because treatment decisions may depend on timing and risk.

Arrange urgent help for severe breathlessness, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, difficulty waking, or blue, grey, or very pale lips or skin. Prompt assessment is also sensible when fever or weakness is worsening, fluids cannot be kept down, or breathing becomes harder during ordinary activity.
