What should you know about a COVID-19 RAT test?

Most home RATs use a nasal sample placed into a test device. Follow that product's instructions closely, including how the sample is collected and when the result should be read. A positive result supports current COVID-19 infection, even if symptoms are mild or absent. A negative result lowers the chance of infection but does not rule it out, especially early in illness or after an inadequate sample. A faint test line can still be meaningful if it appears within the stated reading window.

If the test is positive, limit close contact, improve ventilation and follow current local health advice. Tell people who may have been exposed and contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, older, or managing a long-term illness, because treatment decisions can be time-sensitive. If the result is negative but you have fever, cough, headache, fatigue or feel generally unwell, stay cautious and repeat testing according to the kit guidance or ask about a laboratory test.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, new confusion, unusual difficulty staying awake, or lips or face that look blue or grey. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are worsening, fever returns after improving, or you cannot keep fluids down. A clinician can assess whether complications such as pneumonia need consideration.
