What should you know about the COVID-19 pandemic?

Pandemic describes the broad spread of an infectious disease; it does not predict how severe illness will be for every person. COVID-19 can range from mild symptoms to serious disease affecting the lungs and other organs. Risk changes with age, health conditions, immunity, and the circulating virus. Some people have symptoms that continue after the initial infection, known as Long COVID. Pneumonia is a possible serious complication.

Stay home when unwell where practical, improve indoor ventilation, wash hands, and consider a well-fitting mask in crowded or poorly ventilated settings. Keep vaccinations up to date according to clinical advice. If symptoms begin, limit close contact with people at higher risk and ask a clinician whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, new confusion, inability to stay awake, or blue or grey lips. Contact a clinician if fever, cough, fatigue, headache, or feeling generally unwell is worsening, if you cannot maintain fluids, or if you have a condition that increases the chance of severe illness.
