The short answer

COVID-19 is a respiratory infection that can cause fever, cough, tiredness, headache, or feeling generally unwell; most people recover with supportive care, but some need prompt medical assessment. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and a person may spread the virus before feeling unwell. A test can help guide decisions about staying home and contacting people who may have been exposed.

What COVID-19 can look like

COVID-19 commonly affects the nose, throat, and airways. Possible symptoms include a new cough, fever or chills, fatigue, headache, sore throat, blocked or runny nose, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Some people have no symptoms. Symptoms may overlap with other viral infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

A small proportion of people develop infection lower in the lungs, which can lead to pneumonia and difficulty breathing. The risk of serious illness is higher for older adults and people with certain long-term health conditions or reduced immunity. Symptoms that continue or return after the initial illness may need assessment for Long COVID or another explanation.

What to do if you may have it

Stay home while you feel unwell, limit close contact, improve ventilation, and consider wearing a well-fitting mask around others. Follow current UAE public-health and workplace advice, since testing and isolation instructions can change. Rest, drink fluids, and use medicines only as directed on the label or by a clinician. Do not start antibiotics unless a healthcare professional prescribes them for a bacterial infection.

Contact a clinician early if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, have a long-term condition, or take medicines that may affect treatment choices. Keep a record of when symptoms began, any test result, and medicines you take.

When to seek medical care

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, or pale, grey, or blue lips or skin. Seek urgent clinical advice if breathing is getting harder, you cannot keep fluids down, you are becoming unusually drowsy, or a fever is not settling.

If symptoms are worsening, lasting longer than expected, or interfering with normal activities, arrange an assessment. A clinician can check your breathing, oxygen level when appropriate, hydration, and the possibility of complications such as pneumonia.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need a test or examination, which symptom-relief medicines are suitable with your existing prescriptions, how to protect household members, and which warning signs should prompt immediate help. If you have a health condition or take regular medicines, ask whether COVID-19 changes your usual care plan.

Questions people ask

Can COVID-19 be diagnosed from symptoms alone?

No. Symptoms can resemble other respiratory infections, so testing and clinical assessment may be needed.

When can COVID-19 symptoms need more than home care?

Breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, inability to stay awake, dehydration, or worsening symptoms require urgent medical advice or emergency help.

Can symptoms continue after the infection?

Yes. Ongoing fatigue, cough, or other symptoms deserve clinical review, particularly when they affect daily activities.
