Cough with a metallic taste and wheezing

A cough with wheezing and a metallic taste needs attention to breathing, because the combination can have several causes. Arrange medical advice if it is new, persistent, or worsening; seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty or swelling.

Wheezing is a musical or whistling sound caused by narrowed airways. It can occur with asthma, acute bronchitis, a viral illness, COPD, or an allergic reaction. A metallic taste may follow irritation in the mouth or throat, mucus, reflux, dry mouth, or a medicine; a small amount of blood can also taste metallic. These symptoms do not by themselves identify one diagnosis. New wheezing after an exposure is especially important to report.

Move away from smoke, fumes, dust, or a suspected allergen and sit upright. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as directed; do not borrow one. Sip water and note when the taste and wheeze began, what you were exposed to, and whether symptoms change with activity or position. A clinician may listen to the chest and decide whether inhaled treatment, such as a nebuliser, is needed. Avoid starting antibiotics or leftover steroids without advice.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, confusion, faintness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Wheezing after food, medicine, or an insect sting can be anaphylaxis. Seek prompt assessment for chest pain, coughing blood, fever with worsening breathing, or wheezing that does not settle with your prescribed plan.
