Cough-induced asthma: symptoms and next steps

Asthma involves sensitive, narrowed airways. Cough may flare after exercise, cold air, respiratory infections, smoke, dust, or allergens, and can be worse at night. Some people also develop chest tightness or Wheezing, while others mainly cough. Allergic Rhinitis and House Dust Mite Allergy may occur alongside airway symptoms. A cough is a presentation of asthma in some people, but coughing alone cannot confirm the condition.

Arrange an assessment if coughing keeps returning, wakes you, limits activity, or follows a recognisable trigger. Record the setting, time, trigger, and any breathlessness or chest tightness. Reduce smoke, dust, and strong scents where possible. If asthma is diagnosed, use prescribed inhalers exactly as explained and keep a written action plan. A Nebuliser Treatment may be used in some clinical situations, but it is not a substitute for an individual asthma plan.

Seek urgent help if breathing becomes difficult, speech is hard, lips look blue or grey, you feel faint or confused, or prescribed reliever treatment is not helping as expected. Rapid worsening after an allergen exposure also needs urgent attention, especially with facial swelling, throat tightness, or widespread hives.

Ask whether you need breathing tests, how to recognise an asthma flare, which triggers to avoid, and when to use each inhaler. Discuss whether nasal allergy or dust exposure is contributing to the cough.
