What should you know about a cough for 2 months?

A cough can persist after an infection, but a prolonged cough may also reflect asthma, acid reflux, nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis, or a condition affecting the airways. Chronic cough is a description of duration, not a diagnosis. Mucus, wheeze, a night-time pattern, heartburn, a blocked nose, or exposure to smoke can guide the assessment. The duration does not reveal the cause by itself, and many different conditions can produce the same symptom.

Book a medical review and keep a simple record of when the cough occurs, whether it is dry or brings up mucus, and what triggers it. List current medicines, smoking or vaping exposure, workplace dust, recent infections, and any weight change or night sweats. Drink fluids, avoid smoke, and do not keep adding cough products without checking their ingredients. A clinician may listen to the chest and decide whether further tests or treatment are appropriate.

Arrange urgent assessment for chest pain, coughing blood even in a small amount, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, drenching night sweats, or rapidly worsening breathing. Children, older adults, and people with significant lung or immune problems may need earlier review.
