Cough and loose motion: what to know

A viral illness can affect the airways and bowel together, while a Common Cold more often causes respiratory symptoms alone. New medicines, contaminated food, or a stomach infection can explain loose motion while the cough has another cause. Acid Reflux, Allergic Rhinitis, or Asthma can cause cough without explaining diarrhoea. Acute Bronchitis may cause a persistent cough, whereas Bronchiectasis or Chronic Cough need medical assessment when symptoms continue or recur.

Record the start time, stool frequency, fever, vomiting, mucus, wheeze, and any recent travel, food, antibiotics, or sick contacts. The combination does not by itself identify a single condition.

Take frequent small drinks of water or an oral rehydration solution, particularly after each loose stool. Continue light foods as tolerated and avoid alcohol, very fatty meals, and foods that clearly worsen symptoms. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while diarrhoea is active. Do not start antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicines without advice; the right choice depends on the cause, age, pregnancy, and other health conditions.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, black or bloody stool, or intense abdominal pain. Seek prompt medical advice when fluids cannot stay down, urine becomes very infrequent, fever is persistent, or diarrhoea does not settle. Children, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions can become dehydrated quickly.
