Cough after pneumonia

Pneumonia inflames the air sacs and airways. Even when the infection is improving, mucus and irritated lung tissue can keep provoking a cough. Energy and breathing may also recover gradually, so compare each day with the previous few days rather than expecting an immediate return to normal.

A cough that becomes more frequent, brings up increasing phlegm, or comes with chills or fever may signal that the infection is not settling or has returned. New confusion, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening illness needs urgent attention because serious infection can affect the whole body. COVID-19 or influenza may be relevant causes of the original illness or a new infection.

Follow the treatment plan, take prescribed medicines as directed, drink enough to avoid dehydration, and build activity slowly with rest between tasks. Gentle movement can help prevent long periods of stillness, but stop and seek advice if it causes marked breathlessness, dizziness, or chest pain. Avoid smoking and smoky rooms.

Notice the colour and amount of mucus, temperature, breathing effort, appetite, and alertness. Do not suppress a productive cough with leftover medicine without advice. Keep follow-up appointments if arranged, particularly when symptoms are not steadily improving or there is an underlying heart or lung condition.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, or inability to stay awake. Seek same-day medical advice for returning fever, chills, worsening cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, dehydration, or a clear drop in exercise tolerance. Urgent review is also needed when a person improves and then deteriorates again.

Ask whether the recovery pattern is expected, whether your lungs need re-examination, and how to pace activity. Tell the doctor when pneumonia was diagnosed, which treatment was taken, whether fever has returned, and whether the cough is dry or brings up phlegm.
