Cough after flu

A cough can remain after flu because inflamed airways are still sensitive, but worsening breathlessness, chest pain or fever needs medical review. Recovery may be uneven: energy can return before coughing settles. Consider the whole picture, including breathing, temperature, hydration and whether symptoms are gradually improving.

Flu can inflame the lining of the breathing tubes and leave mucus or an over-sensitive cough reflex behind. A dry cough may shift to a mucus-producing cough as the airways clear. A new fever, increasing shortness of breath, sharp chest pain or marked weakness can indicate a complication such as acute bronchitis or another infection and should not be dismissed as routine recovery.

Rest, drink regularly and avoid smoking, dust and strong fragrances. Warm fluids may soothe the throat. Return to usual activity gradually, stopping if dizziness or breathlessness develops. Do not start antibiotics or combine cough medicines without professional advice; the suitable choice depends on the cause, age, pregnancy and other medicines.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, fainting or persistent chest pain. Arrange prompt review if fever returns, breathing becomes harder, the cough is rapidly worsening, or you are unable to drink. Ongoing cough may also need assessment for asthma, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, bronchiectasis or chronic cough.

Ask whether your symptoms fit post-viral airway irritation, whether your lungs should be examined, and which medicines are safe with your conditions. Mention any wheezing, chest pain, fever or reduced exercise tolerance.
