What should you know about cosmetic allergy test?

A reaction after using makeup, skincare, hair dye, nail products, or fragrance may be irritant contact dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis. Allergy testing is chosen from the product history and often examines small amounts of suspected ingredients on the skin under medical supervision. The test may need several checks because a delayed reaction can appear after the appointment. A negative result does not prove every cosmetic is suitable, and it may not explain immediate swelling, wheeze, or symptoms caused by unrelated triggers such as food, pets, or dust.

Bring product packaging or ingredient lists, photographs of the rash, and a timeline of each reaction. Do not deliberately reapply a product that caused a significant reaction. Follow instructions about creams or medicines that could affect the skin test. After testing, use products recommended by the clinician and introduce alternatives one at a time so a new reaction is easier to recognise. A patch-test plan is different from testing for Allergic Conjunctivitis, Allergic Rhinitis, or Asthma.

Get emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat; trouble breathing; faintness; or rapidly spreading symptoms, as these may indicate Anaphylaxis. Seek a prompt clinical review for blistering, extensive peeling, painful skin, eye involvement, infection signs, or a rash that continues after stopping the suspected product. Do not wait for routine allergy testing during a severe reaction.
