What should you know about corticosteroids for gout?

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals in a joint. Most people with gout notice sudden joint pain, swelling, warmth, and tenderness during a flare. A corticosteroid reduces the immune and inflammatory response around the crystals; it does not remove the crystals or replace long-term urate management.

A clinician may choose tablets, an injection into a joint, or another targeted approach. The choice can change when several joints are involved, when swallowing medicine is difficult, or when conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease affect other options.

Use the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and tell the clinician about diabetes, kidney problems, infection, stomach concerns, and medicines you already take. Rest the painful joint, keep it comfortably elevated, and drink fluids unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Do not start or stop long-term gout medicine without advice; flare treatment and prevention have different purposes.

Seek prompt help for severe pain that is not improving, inability to use the limb, or a new rash or breathing difficulty after medicine. Do not assume every swollen joint is gout.
