Short answer

Coronavirus statistics summarise infection, testing, hospital care and deaths, but they cannot determine whether you personally have COVID-19.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Reading a statistic

Start by asking what is being counted. A test-positive figure reflects testing and reporting as well as infection. A hospital figure describes people who became unwell enough to need hospital care, while a death figure may follow infection by some time. The place, date range, test access and definition used all change the meaning. Comparing figures without that context can create a misleading impression.

Statistics help health services plan and show broad trends. They do not replace an assessment of your symptoms. COVID-19 may involve [Cough](/symptoms/cough/), [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), headache, fatigue or feeling generally unwell, but those symptoms can have other causes too.

Use the information in context

When reading an update, note its location, publication date, time period, measure and source. Avoid treating a single day as a complete trend because reporting can be delayed or uneven. Follow current local guidance for testing and reducing contact while ill. Keep track of your temperature, breathing, fluid intake and ability to do ordinary activities. If you have a higher-risk health condition, ask a clinician early what plan applies if you become infected.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to remain awake, or blue or grey lips or skin. Get medical advice if symptoms are worsening, you are becoming dehydrated, or fever persists. Breathlessness or chest symptoms can signal a complication such as [Pneumonia](/conditions/pneumonia/). Symptoms that continue after the infection has settled, including fatigue, should be discussed because [Long COVID](/conditions/long-covid/) is one possible explanation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which statistic is relevant to your area, whether you need testing, and which symptoms require same-day advice. Mention your symptom timeline, medical history and medicines so guidance can be tailored.

Questions people ask

Why do coronavirus statistics change after publication?

Results can be reported late, corrected or assigned to a different date, so early figures may be incomplete.

Which statistic should guide my personal care?

Your symptoms, risk factors and clinical advice matter more than a population total or daily headline.
