What should you know about coronavirus counter?
Updated

Short answer
A coronavirus counter shows reported COVID-19 activity, but it cannot tell you whether you personally have the infection or how severe it will be.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- A counter can show
- Reported activity or health-system measures
- A counter cannot show
- Your diagnosis or individual severity
- Watch for
- Breathing difficulty and confusion
Reading a counter carefully
Counters may display new reports, total reports, hospital information or deaths, and these measures do not describe the same thing. The date shown may refer to the report date rather than the date of infection. Delays, testing availability and changes in definitions can make the display move up or down. A counter is background information, not a diagnosis and not a substitute for local clinical advice.
What to do if you feel unwell
If you develop fever, cough, headache, fatigue or a general unwell feeling, consider testing according to local guidance and reduce close contact while symptoms are active. Rest, drink fluids and monitor how you are breathing. Keep vulnerable household members informed and improve ventilation where possible. Contact a clinician early if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, older, or have a long-term condition that raises concern.
When to seek care
Get prompt medical advice if symptoms worsen, you cannot drink adequately, or you become weak or light-headed. Call for urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, blue or grey lips, or difficulty staying awake. Breathlessness or a cough that rapidly worsens should be assessed even if the counter looks reassuring.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what the counter measures, whether you need a test, how long to limit contact, and which personal warning signs should lead you to urgent care.

Questions people ask
Can a counter diagnose COVID-19?
No. Diagnosis depends on your symptoms, examination and sometimes a test.
Why can a counter change suddenly?
Reporting delays, testing patterns and revised data can change the display without reflecting an immediate change in every person’s risk.
