What should you know about corona chest X-ray?

The test creates pictures of the chest, including the lungs and heart area. A clinician may look for changes that can occur with pneumonia or other lung problems. An X-ray cannot by itself confirm or exclude every cause of cough or breathlessness, and a normal image does not replace a clinical assessment. The result is considered with your symptoms, oxygen level, examination and any relevant test results. Chronic cough, bronchiectasis and tuberculosis can have different appearances and may need different investigations.

You usually stand against the equipment while holding your breath briefly so the images are clear. Tell the radiographer if you might be pregnant, and remove jewellery or clothing that obscures the chest. Follow the instructions about where to attend and whether any further tests are needed. A GP consultation can help decide whether imaging is appropriate and how to interpret the report in context.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, chest pain, or difficulty staying awake. Do not wait for an X-ray appointment if breathing is seriously impaired. Arrange review for persistent fever, worsening cough, coughing blood, or breathlessness after coronavirus illness, even if an earlier image was reassuring.
