What should you know about copper coil induction?

Short answer

A copper coil is a contraceptive device; it is not used to induce labour or start a pregnancy-related procedure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the copper coil does

A trained clinician places the device inside the uterus for contraception. Copper affects sperm movement and function in the uterus, reducing the chance of fertilisation. It does not trigger contractions or prepare the cervix for birth. You can read about the device on the [Copper IUD Device](/materials/copper-iud-device/) page.

Choosing the right care

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or have been told you need labour induction, contact your maternity team rather than relying on information about coils. If your question is about contraception after pregnancy, ask when an intrauterine device is appropriate and how fitting is timed. A [Hormonal Coil](/treatments/contraception-and-family-planning/hormonal-coil/) is another intrauterine contraceptive option, not a labour-induction method.

When to seek medical help

During pregnancy, seek urgent maternity advice for bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, reduced fetal movement or feeling very unwell. If a coil is in place and pregnancy is suspected, prompt assessment is needed. Do not try to remove a device yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which method is intended, whether you are pregnant, what induction plan has been recommended, and how contraception can be arranged after delivery.
