What should you know about constant cough nasal drip?

Nasal mucus can run down the back of the throat when the lining is inflamed. Allergic Rhinitis may cause clear drainage, sneezing, and an itchy nose. A Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can leave a cough and mucus after other symptoms improve. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat and trigger cough without obvious heartburn. Asthma, Bronchiectasis, or Chronic Cough are other possibilities when symptoms recur, wheeze, or produce ongoing chest mucus.

The colour and thickness of mucus do not diagnose the cause on their own. Note whether the drip is seasonal, follows an infection, worsens when lying down, or comes with wheezing, fever, facial pain, or shortness of breath.

Drink regularly, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and try saline nasal care if it is appropriate for you. Gentle nose blowing is preferable to repeated forceful blowing. If lying down worsens the cough, discuss sleep positioning and reflux triggers with a clinician. Do not start antibiotics simply because mucus changes colour. Arrange a review if the cough continues, returns frequently, or affects sleep or activity.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, faintness, or coughing up blood. Seek prompt medical advice for high fever with marked illness, new breathlessness, dehydration, or symptoms after choking. Make an appointment for a cough that does not settle, repeated episodes, unexplained weight loss, or persistent wheeze.

Ask whether the drainage is nasal or coming from the chest, whether allergy or reflux fits the pattern, and what treatment is suitable for the duration and accompanying symptoms.
