Conjunctivitis and light sensitivity: what should you know?

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, means ordinary light feels uncomfortable or painful. Surface irritation from conjunctivitis may make the eye more sensitive, particularly when redness and watering are present. However, marked sensitivity can also occur with problems deeper in the eye or with conditions such as migraine. It should not be used alone to identify the cause.

Conjunctivitis commonly affects the eye surface and may cause discharge, but severe pain, reduced vision or a fixed hazy spot is less typical and changes the urgency of assessment.

Rest the eyes in softer indoor light, wear sunglasses outdoors, and avoid rubbing. Clean discharge gently with a fresh damp pad and wash hands afterwards. Do not drive if vision is blurred or light makes it unsafe. Note whether the sensitivity affects one or both eyes, whether it began suddenly, and whether headache or nausea accompanies it.

Get urgent eye assessment for severe pain, reduced vision, intense light sensitivity, a new cloudy or white area on the eye, injury, or inability to open the eye. Seek emergency help if light sensitivity occurs with a severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion or a new rash, because Meningitis requires urgent attention. Migraine can also cause light sensitivity, but a new or unusual pattern deserves medical advice.

Ask whether the eye surface looks consistent with conjunctivitis, whether your vision and cornea need checking, and what symptoms should prompt same-day review. Mention headache, fever, neck stiffness, injury and any medicines you use.
