Discuss when to move to a progestogen-only or non-hormonal option and how to switch without a contraceptive gap. Do not stop solely because periods have become irregular: ovulation can still occur during the menopause transition. Condoms remain the method that also reduces sexually transmitted infection transmission.

Emergency assessment is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, one-sided painful leg swelling, facial droop, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, sudden visual change, or an intense unfamiliar headache. These warning signs can indicate a clot or vascular event.

Arrange timely examination for bleeding after sex, unexpectedly heavy bleeding, bleeding that begins after a long absence, a breast lump, jaundice, or persistent pelvic pain. Such symptoms need evaluation on their own merits rather than being attributed automatically to age or the pill.
