Gedarel combined pill: what to know

Like other combined pills, it uses an oestrogen with a progestogen to prevent pregnancy. It may also make bleeding more regular, lighter or less painful, although spotting and other side effects can occur, especially after starting or changing pills.

The name identifies the product, but the carton and patient leaflet identify the exact formulation supplied. Read these details whenever you receive a new pack, particularly if its appearance or strength differs from your previous prescription.

Combined pills mainly work by stopping ovulation. They also thicken cervical mucus and alter the womb lining. They do not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so barrier protection may still be appropriate.

Use the tablets in the sequence shown on the blister and begin the next pack according to its leaflet. If you miss tablets, start late, vomit soon after a dose or have ongoing severe diarrhoea, consult the pack guidance or a pharmacist promptly because the response depends on where you are in the pack.

Tell the prescriber about migraines, blood clots, high blood pressure, smoking, liver disease, breast cancer history and every medicine or herbal product you take. Some treatments can reduce contraceptive protection, while Gedarel can affect how certain other medicines are managed.

Get urgent help for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, coughing blood, one-sided leg pain or swelling, sudden trouble speaking, weakness on one side, sudden visual loss or an unusually severe headache. Stop taking further tablets until urgent clinical advice if the treating clinician directs you to do so.

Arrange a prompt review for a new migraine, jaundice, persistent low mood, a breast change, or bleeding that is unusually heavy or continues beyond the expected adjustment period. A pregnancy test may be appropriate after missed pills or absent withdrawal bleeding when dosing has not been reliable.
