Cervical ectropion seen during colposcopy

These cells normally line the cervical canal. When visible around the cervical opening, they can look redder and feel more fragile than the smooth cells covering the outer cervix. Ectropion is not cervical cancer and is not the same as cervical dysplasia, although colposcopy may be used to distinguish different appearances.

Many people with ectropion notice no symptoms. Because the exposed cells are delicate and make mucus, ectropion can present with increased clear discharge, light bleeding after sex or spotting after a cervical examination. Those symptoms can have other causes, so the appearance, cervical screening history and any test results are considered together.

A clinician may apply examination liquids and inspect the transformation zone with magnification. If an area does not have a typical benign appearance, a biopsy may be advised. The laboratory examines the tissue rather than relying only on how it looked.

Ectropion without troublesome symptoms may not need treatment. Attend recommended cervical screening and wait for any samples to be reported before drawing conclusions. If discharge or contact bleeding is disrupting daily life, discuss whether another cause should be excluded and whether treatment of the delicate surface is suitable for you.

Tell the clinician if you may be pregnant, use hormonal contraception, take medicines that affect bleeding or have pain, unusual discharge or bleeding between periods. These details help shape the assessment and the choice of follow-up.

Arrange assessment for new, persistent or recurrent bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, bleeding after menopause, unusual discharge or pelvic pain. These symptoms deserve evaluation even when ectropion was previously seen. After a biopsy, contact the clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, worsening pelvic pain, fever, offensive-smelling discharge or feeling acutely unwell; seek urgent help for fainting or rapidly increasing bleeding.

Ask whether the whole area was visible, whether the appearance was typical of ectropion, whether samples were taken and when results will be available. If symptoms continue, ask what other causes are being considered and what the benefits and possible after-effects of treatment would be.
