What should you know about clogged pores whiteheads?

A whitehead develops when a hair follicle opening becomes blocked by sebum and dead skin cells. The opening stays covered, giving the bump a pale or skin-colored appearance. Whiteheads are a form of non-inflammatory acne and may occur on the forehead, cheeks, chin, chest, or back.

Several small, firm facial bumps can look similar. Comedonal acne is a pattern with many clogged pores, while milia are tiny keratin cysts and are not the same process as acne. A clinician can distinguish them by location, texture, and examination.

Wash with a mild cleanser, avoid scrubbing, and choose products labeled non-comedogenic when possible. Do not squeeze or pick: pressure can irritate the follicle and leave lingering marks. Introduce one active product at a time so irritation is easier to identify.

A topical retinoid may help normalize shedding inside follicles, but it should be selected and used according to professional advice, especially during pregnancy or if your skin is sensitive. An acne extraction facial may be considered for selected clogged pores, but extractions should be performed hygienically and gently.

See a dermatologist when bumps persist despite a consistent routine, become red or painful, spread to the chest or back, or leave dark marks or scars. Seek earlier advice if a bump bleeds, ulcerates, changes quickly, or does not resemble your other lesions.
