What should you know about clear catarrh?

Catarrh describes extra mucus in the nose, throat, or upper airways. When it is clear, the mucus is commonly watery rather than thick, and it may slide down the back of the throat as postnasal drip. Dust, pollen, dry air, smoke, and changes in temperature can irritate the lining of the nose. Allergic rhinitis may bring sneezing and an itchy or blocked nose, while sinus inflammation can cause facial pressure or reduced smell. Reflux can irritate the throat and create a need to clear it, even without obvious heartburn.

Clear mucus alone does not identify one particular illness. Notice whether it began after a cold, follows exposure to an allergen, worsens when lying down, or continues for several weeks.

Drink fluids regularly and consider a saline nasal spray or rinse to loosen mucus. Use the rinse only with sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water, following the product instructions. Avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and reduce bedroom dust if symptoms follow indoor exposure. If reflux seems relevant, avoid lying down soon after meals and discuss persistent throat clearing with a clinician. A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether an allergy treatment is suitable for you. Do not share nasal sprays, and check the label before using a decongestant.

Arrange an assessment if catarrh lasts several weeks, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or comes with troublesome facial pain, fever, wheezing, breathlessness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or throat, confusion, or a sudden severe headache with neck stiffness. A clinician may examine your nose and throat and consider allergies, sinus disease, reflux, or another cause.
