What should you know about cleansers for rosacea?

Short answer
For rosacea, cleanse with lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free product, avoid rubbing, and stop any cleanser that causes burning or lasting redness.

How rosacea-prone skin may react
Rosacea can cause flushing, persistent redness, visible small vessels, burning, stinging, and sometimes acne-like pimples. Heat, friction, strong fragrance, alcohol-heavy formulas, and very hot or cold water may aggravate symptoms. A cleanser cannot remove rosacea, but a calm routine can reduce avoidable irritation.
Skin sensitivity can change over time. A product tolerated previously may sting during a flare, so the sensation and redness after washing are useful clues to discuss with a clinician.
Use a low-irritation routine
Cleanse with fingertips once or twice daily as tolerated. Use lukewarm water, a creamy or low-foam fragrance-free cleanser, and light pressure. Rinse well, pat dry with a soft clean towel, and apply a bland moisturiser while skin is slightly damp. Introduce new products separately and test them on a small area first.
Avoid facial brushes, scrubs, washcloth friction, and essential oils during active irritation. If redness or pimples continue, a clinician may discuss azelaic acid treatment. IPL photofacial or pulsed dye laser treatment may be considered for selected visible redness or vessels after assessment.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a review if facial redness is persistent, symptoms are interfering with daily comfort, or products repeatedly cause burning. Seek urgent eye assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, or a red painful eye, because rosacea can involve the eyes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit rosacea, which cleanser ingredients to avoid, how to protect the skin barrier during a flare, and whether prescription treatment or a vascular procedure is appropriate.
