What should you know about cleansers for closed comedones?

Closed comedones are small blocked pores covered by skin, often appearing as whiteheads or flesh-coloured bumps. A cleanser removes surface oil, sunscreen, and makeup, but it cannot dissolve every plug inside a pore. Harsh rubbing, rough scrubs, and frequent washing can irritate skin and make bumps look more noticeable.

Not every tiny white bump is a comedone. Milia are firm keratin-filled cysts and need different management. Comedonal acne can also occur with larger acne patterns.

Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic cleanser with clean fingertips. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Avoid brushes, abrasive grains, squeezing, and leaving heavy cleansing oils on the skin if they trigger congestion. Remove makeup before bed and introduce one new active product at a time.

If whiteheads continue, a clinician may discuss topical retinoids, which help normalise pore shedding. An acne extraction facial should be considered only with a trained professional, since forceful extraction can cause inflammation or marks.
