What should you know about citrus allergy test?

A clinician will ask what you ate, how quickly symptoms appeared, how much was consumed, and whether contact with peel or juice caused a reaction. Testing may include a skin prick test or a blood test for allergy-related antibodies. A positive result shows sensitivity, but it does not by itself prove that citrus caused every symptom.

Symptoms may involve the mouth, skin, gut, nose, eyes, or breathing. Similar complaints can occur with intolerance, irritation, pollen-related reactions, or another food. Allergic Rhinitis, Allergic Conjunctivitis, Asthma, Chronic Sinusitis, and Food Allergy may be relevant to the wider assessment.

Do not deliberately eat citrus to test yourself at home, especially if a previous reaction involved swelling, wheezing, faintness, or widespread hives. Keep a symptom and food diary, retain ingredient labels, and tell the clinician about antihistamines, asthma, pregnancy, and previous severe reactions; some medicines can affect skin testing.

Until reviewed, follow the avoidance advice you have been given and check sauces, drinks, desserts, and supplements for citrus ingredients. A clinician can explain whether supervised food challenge is appropriate and how to manage accidental exposure.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, collapse, or rapidly spreading symptoms after citrus exposure. These can be signs of Anaphylaxis. Use your prescribed emergency medicine if instructed, then seek emergency care even if symptoms improve.
