Cilest combined pill: safe use and alternatives

Brand names and supplied formulations can differ between countries and over time. Use the active ingredients and strength printed on your own pack to guide advice, and do not substitute another combined pill tablet-for-tablet without professional instructions.

Combined pills contain an oestrogen and a progestogen. They mainly prevent ovulation, while also thickening cervical mucus and changing the uterine lining. Ethinylestradiol is an oestrogen used in many formulations; the progestogen must be verified from the packet rather than inferred from the brand name.

The pill may also make bleeding more predictable and reduce painful periods. It is sometimes used as part of symptom management for endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome, but it does not cure those conditions. Suitability depends on health history, current medicines and personal preferences.

Follow the leaflet for your exact pack, taking tablets in the labelled order.
