Chronic bronchitis is linked to a long-lasting cough with mucus, while a chest X-ray creates an image of the lungs and surrounding chest structures. The image may help a clinician look for pneumonia, changes linked with bronchiectasis, or another explanation for persistent cough. It may look normal even when airway irritation is causing symptoms.

The clinician will interpret the image alongside your symptom pattern, examination, smoking or exposure history, and sometimes breathing tests. Acid reflux, asthma, allergies, a common cold, and other conditions can also contribute to cough.

Tell the imaging team if pregnancy is possible and mention any previous chest investigations. Wear clothing that is easy to change and follow instructions about removing metal objects.
