Short answer

Chronic anovulation means ovulation repeatedly does not occur, which can disrupt periods and make pregnancy harder, but evaluation can identify manageable causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core feature
Egg release repeatedly fails to occur.
Period pattern
Bleeding may be absent, infrequent, prolonged or unpredictable.
Care depends on
The cause, womb-lining protection and whether pregnancy is desired.

How ongoing anovulation affects the body

Without regular release of an egg, progesterone does not follow its usual monthly pattern. Bleeding may become infrequent, unpredictable, prolonged or absent. Polycystic ovary syndrome is one possible cause; thyroid or prolactin disorders, changes in weight or energy availability, some medicines and reduced ovarian function are others. Chronic anovulation can present with irregular periods and difficulty conceiving, although either symptom also has other explanations. Long gaps between bleeds can allow the womb lining to build up, so cycle protection matters even when pregnancy is not a current goal.

Assessment and treatment

Record bleeding dates, medication use and symptoms such as acne, increased facial hair, hot flushes, nipple discharge or major weight change. A clinician may check a pregnancy test, hormone blood tests and pelvic ultrasound, chosen according to your history. Treatment follows the cause and your priorities. Options can include regulating bleeding to protect the womb lining, treating an underlying hormonal disorder, or inducing ovulation when pregnancy is desired. Metformin is used in selected people with PCOS; ovarian drilling is a specialist surgical option rather than routine first-line care.

When medical review is needed

Book an appointment if periods repeatedly disappear or remain very irregular, bleeding is prolonged, or you are trying to conceive without success. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding with dizziness or faintness, severe pelvic pain, or pain with a positive pregnancy test. New severe headache, visual disturbance or unexplained nipple discharge also warrants timely assessment because it can point to a hormone-related problem needing investigation.

Useful questions at your appointment

You may want to ask which cause fits your pattern, whether the womb lining needs protection, and which tests would change management. If pregnancy is a goal, discuss when to begin fertility assessment, how ovulation will be monitored and whether ovulation induction is appropriate. Mention any complementary products because some can interact with prescribed hormonal or fertility medicines.

Questions people ask

Can you bleed without ovulating?

Yes. The womb lining can shed irregularly without the coordinated hormone changes of an ovulatory cycle, so bleeding alone does not confirm that an egg was released.

Can chronic anovulation be treated if I want to become pregnant?

Often there are treatment options. The plan may address an underlying cause and use monitored ovulation induction, selected according to hormone results, medical history and other fertility factors.
